Prepping 101: Does The World Really Ends In 2012?

Let’s be a pessimist for the day, shall we?

By now, I am sure most of us would have watched one of the most anticipated movies for the year – Roland Emmerich’s 2012. And if you have not watched it yet, then you really should – for 2 main reasons: – One: The visual effect in the movie is mind-blowing and Two: It may come TRUE in 2012.

In the movie 2012, millions (or rather billions) die from earthquakes, gigantic tsunamis and volcanoes and the world as we know it today comes to an awful end with the Himalayas no longer being the tallest area in the world.

Many of us will, of course, argue that the movie nonetheless is nothing more than entertainment for the masses from Hollywood’s creative storytellers and we have nothing to worry about.

However, we should not discount the fact that 2012 is indeed a special year in the Mayan calendar.

The commonly established way of expressing the correlation between the Maya calendar and the Gregorian or Julian calendars is to provide number of days from the start of the Julian Period (Monday, January 1, 4713 BCE) to the Long Count’s zero date or base date, which was 13.0.0.0.0 (the corresponding Calendar Round date was 4 Ajaw, 8 Kumk’u).

The Long Count set its “zero date” at a point in the past marking the end of the previous world and the beginning of the current one.

Today, the most widely accepted correlations of the end of the thirteenth b’ak’tun, or Mayan date 13.0.0.0.0, with the Western calendar are either December 21 or December 23, 2012.

(From Wikipedia)

The last 13.0.0.0.0 date was on August 11, 3114 BCE and in the same 32nd Century BC, it was also reported “that the Kali Yuga started with the disappearance of Krishna, marking the end of the Dvapara Yuga, after which the epic heroes of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas retire to the Himalayas”.

Some theorists around the world are indeed anticipating bad news for the world in the year 2012.

Others predict the end of our way of life in the next Ice Age or collision from meteorite (similar to the one that was rumoured to have wiped out dinosaurs from the face of the earth – remember the movie Armageddon?) or alien invasion (War of the World)

Others include (much remains as a theory):-

Geomagnetic reversal

A geomagnetic reversal (often incorrectly referred to as a polar shift by proponents of this hypothesis) is triggered by a massive solar flare, one with energy equal to 100 billion atomic bombs. This belief is supposedly supported by observations that the Earth’s magnetic field is weakening, which indicates an impending reversal of the north and south magnetic poles.

Scientists believe the Earth is overdue for a geomagnetic reversal, and has been for a long time, even since the time of the Mayans, because the last reversal was 780,000 years ago.

Planet Nibiru

Proponents of a Nibiru collision claim that a planet, called Nibiru or Planet X, will collide with or pass by Earth in that year.

This idea, which has been circulating since 1995 in New Age circles and initially slated the event for 2003, is based on claims of channeling from alien species and has been widely ridiculed.

Black hole alignment

An apocalyptic reading of Jenkins’s hypothesis has that, when the galactic alignment occurs, it will somehow create a combined gravitational effect between the Sun and the super massive black hole at the center of our galaxy (known as Sgr A*), creating havoc on Earth.

There are plenty of arguments for and against the end of the world in 2012.

What if it is true and powerful Governments around the world have found real pieces of evidence that confirm that the world will indeed end in 2012 and are quietly building some kind of “ark” to preserve the continuity of mankind.

Remember Svalbard Global Seed Vault in the remote Arctic to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds from locations worldwide in an underground cavern? Is it one of the many steps being taken towards 2012?

What about our own Government? Do they have a Plan B to be executed in case things are not so rosy in 2012? Have we identified “higher grounds” to get the chosen ones (not corrupted, racist soaked politicians but rather the brilliant of the brilliant scientist, researchers, doctors, artists, historians, agriculturists, etc)?

What about us – the individuals (the one that is likely to be left out if the Governments are indeed building secret arks)?

With another 2 years to go and uncertainly of 2012 is still in the air, are we ready for doomsday if it comes calling at our front door? Is there something we can do? Do we have a “Bug out Bag” on standby?

A bug-out bag is a portable kit popular in the survivalist subculture that contains the items one would require to survive for seventy-two hours when evacuating from a disaster. It is also known as a 72-hour kit.

The focus is on evacuation, rather than long-term survival, distinguishing the bug-out bag from a survival kit, a boating or aviation emergency kit, or a fixed-site disaster supplies kit.

The suggested contents of a bug-out bag may contain the following:-

  • Enough food and water to last for seventy two hours. This includes (4 liters (1 gallon) of water per person per day, for washing, drinking and cooking, non-perishable food, water purification supplies, cooking supplies & cutlery and cups/dishes).
  • A first aid kit. Fire starting tool (i.e. matches, ferro rod, lighter, etc.)
  • A disaster plan including location of emergency centers, rallying points, possible evacuation routes etc.
  • Professional emergency literature explaining what to do in various types of disaster studied and understood before the actual disaster but kept for reference.
  • Maps and travel information.
  • Standard camping equipment, including sanitation supplies.
  • Weather appropriate clothing (poncho, headwear, gloves, etc.)
  • Bedding items such as sleeping bags & blankets. Enough medicine to last an extended evacuation period.
  • Pet, child and elderly care needs.
  • Battery or crank operated Radio.
  • Lighting (battery or crank operated flashlight, glow sticks).
  • Crowbar (weapon, building and vehicle entry, etc.)
  • Cash and change, as electronic banking transactions may not be available during the initial period following an emergency or evacuation.
  • Fixed-blade or folding knife.
