Economy 101: Fuel Price Hike – An experiment

Desperate times need desperate measures…

With petrol price up and a possible reduction in toll charges is no where to be seen, it is either going back home late or look for alternate routes. To head back home, I have 2 choices:-

Route 1 (aka the front way)

This is “usual” route that I have been using for the last 4 years or so. The only pain in the neck using this route is the bottle neck created by the fucked up Sunway Toll Plaza. In normal times, it is nothing but a huge car park and we pay for it through our nose.

Other than this and a small traffic jam near IOI Mall, the route is pretty desired – no traffic lights and no awkward roads leading in and out housing areas and the condition of the roads are good (despite some lapses). However, I won’t say that is the safest route for it is so usual to see car pile ups on this route. There you will have – a good driving pace of 80 km/h with no traffic jams on sight when everyone slams on their brakes and comes to a dead stop.

Some idiots up at the front decided to change lane without putting up the right indicators (simply things like put the indicator, see whether it is safe to cut lane, wait and move in).

Route 2 (aka the back way)

This is the “backup” route which I sometimes use when I am at friend’s house or when I hear over the radio that there has been a “major” accident along Route 1. This route seems longer than the usual route that I use. Longer means wasting more fuel.

The other problem here – there are way too many traffic lights – so it is a “stop – go – stop” routine at constant pace, in some place, at every couple of metres. Too many roads leading from and in housing areas compounds the traffic jams. Queue jumpers who uses these housing area roads to sneak into the main route compounds the jam even further.

The condition of the road is also not in par with the condition of Route 1 (quite a number of rough surfaces in some parts) but that is expected to be since Route 2 is not a highway. But other than this, it seems safer than Route 1 for the roads are wider and less traffic towards Puchong.

I still get whacked with toll charges when I reach Puchong but unlike the nightmare at Sunway Toll Plaza, the traffic at this toll plaza is not so bad. I pass through the toll booth quite fast.

The experiment

The only problem would probably be is the length and number of traffic on the road. So, I need to work out the average distance if using these routes and the fuel that I spend in the next few days.

To be continued…

That is of course our typical “champion” drivers lah of course. Interesting insight indeed. Too bad for me, its either the LDP OR the Federal Highway. Not much change indeed 😛

    Cheers!!! 😀
