When it comes to the Tamil movie from the 1970s, we are only familiar with 2 big names – MSV and Illayaraja.
But there were others which included Shankar-Ganesh and this composer – V Kumar who composed for the Tamil movie, Then Sindhudhe Vaanam 1975.
This movie was notable for 2 superb songs – Unnidam Mayangugiren (sung by K. J. Yesudas) and Then Sindhudhe Vaanam (sung by SP Bala). Both songs reminded me of the days of my childhood. Lyrics by the great poet Valli which again, make us ponder with a very meaningful wording for the song.
Unnidam Mayangugiren was one of the oldest K.J. Yesudas songs I could remember that reminded me of the 1970s. The other is the song, Vizhiye Kathai Ezhuthu from MGR’s 1974 movie, Urimai Kural.
If you listen to the song, Unnidam Mayangugiren, it is ahead of its time – the same goes for some of the Illayaraja’s 1970s songs like Senthoora Poovae (the strumming of the guitar & the fiddling of the violins are out of this world) from the movie, 16 Vayathinilae, the year 1977 and – Iruparavaigal from the movie, Niram Maratha Pookal, the year 1979.
More to come…
