Kadal Meengal was a 1981 Tamil movie starring Kamal Haasan, Sujatha, Nagesh and Swapna. Kamal Haasan in a dual role as father & son on opposite sides with the younger Kamal Haasan bent on taking revenge. Image source: IMDB.
Unfortunately, this movie was not the highlight of Kamal Haasan in his string of blockbusters but stands out for Ilaiyaraaja’s classic songs.

One of the better songs from the movie is Thaalattudhe Vaanam composed by Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics were written by the great poet, Kannadasan. The song is beautifully sung by P. Jayachandran and S. Janaki.
The original video song from the movie interestingly does not have the 2 main characters – Kamal Haasan (playing the older role) and Sujatha not having to sing the song. Rather the song comes as a background to their lovemaking which has nice sunsets. Unfortunately, this original video does not do the right justification for the talent and the composition of the maestro for this particular song.
Thankfully we have Lydian Nadhaswaram’s version to glee over on this masterpiece.
The start of the song with the flute, piano and violin sets the right premise for this song before we get the vocals to “thaalattudhe” which in Tamil means putting us on ease and relaxed mood. Lydian’s father and sister did a good job on the vocals.
The chorus of the song is back with the combination of flute, piano and violin which makes one imagine the sunset by the seaside. The late great poet Kannadasan did not fail us with another mesmerising and meaningful lyrics.
