Military shooter games these days is fast becoming so realistic and tactical, you can no longer simply switch on and shoot blindly. The war scenarios can be as real as an actual war scenario.
In the same manner, Polyphony Digital will soon be launching PlayStation all-time favourite and the next iteration in the Gran Turismo series, the Gran Turismo 7. The realism of the cars in this latest series is a galaxy away from my PlayStation game, Gran Turismo 2. Image source: Gran Tourismo.

Operation Flashpoint
One of the first first-shooter games that I ever played was Codemaster’s Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis which takes place on an imagery island with the Americans and the Russians fighting each other for the control of the island.
Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis is a tactical shooter and battlefield simulator video game developed by Bohemia Interactive Studio and published by Codemasters in 2001. In 2011, Bohemia Interactive re-released the game under the title ARMA: Cold War Assault. The game uses objectives and weaponry appropriate to the Cold War, the period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted from 1947 to 1991.
Operation Flashpoint features a wide variety of Cold War-era equipment, all of which can be used by the player, depending on availability in any given mission. Available firearms range from standard-issue military assault rifles such as the M16A2 and the AK-74, machine guns, and more specialized weaponry such as sniper rifles and suppressed submachine guns, all of which have iron sights or telescopic sights that the player can use to aim.
Available vehicles include wheeled vehicles (such as jeeps and trucks), patrol boats, tanks and APCs, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft such as the A-10 Thunderbolt II. If a vehicle is accessible to the player, they can take the position of a driver or simply ride in the vehicle as a passenger. Many vehicles, such as tanks, require a crew of at least a driver and a gunner to be used effectively. All vehicles have accurately modelled 3D interiors.

There are fixed missions but what I love about this game to the ability to create own missions and endless landscape. So imagine a number of M1A1 main battle tanks facing a similar number of Russian T-72 main battle tanks at sunset and you standing on a hill watching the battle taking place.
You take over or set any position that you want, driving any vehicles that you want and aircraft that you want – there is no limit to the gameplay. The graphic is nothing to shout about but it was realistic with you can be shot dead if you did not hide well. There are times I tried to play the role of Special Op and play against a large platoon armed with armoured personal carriers. Other times, I would deploy a couple of C4s on the road to blow out the first MBT and direct platoons with LAW and anti-tanks to take out the rest.

Battlefield 3
This specific F-18 Hornet mission caught the imagination of realism in computing power as it looked very real considering the scratches on the cockpit canopy which shows when the sunlight angle changes.
Battlefield 3 is a 2011 first-person shooter video game developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is a direct sequel to 2005’s Battlefield 2, and the seventh main installment in the Battlefield franchise.
In Battlefield 3’s campaign, players take on the personas of several military roles: a U.S. Marine, an F/A-18F Super Hornet weapon systems officer, an M1A2 Abrams tank operator, and a Spetsnaz GRU operative. The campaign takes place in various locations and follows the stories of two characters, Henry Blackburn and Dimitri Mayakovsky.

The gameplay is modern but is not realistic as commented by the real F/A-18 Hornet pilots (this I blame on inexperienced gamers). And yet, the overall very engaging mission from the start when one walks up to the launch pad and there is a massive storm on the outside.
And there is the warning sound of a missile locking on your Hornet and you quickly deploying the decoy flares to throw the heat-seeking missiles off its tracks that making it a tense moment of flying. Battlefield 3 is just part of the Battlefield series that allows you to play different roles and missions similar to Operation Flashpoint but with better graphics and tactics.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
This particular scenario of the British SAS doing a raid on a house where a group of terrorists are hiding for the next terrorist attack is really realistic especially when they switch on their night vision mode.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a 2019 first-person shooter game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. Serving as the sixteenth overall installment in the Call of Duty series, as well as a reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series, it was released on October 25, 2019, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The game takes place in a realistic and modern setting. The campaign follows a CIA officer and British SAS forces as they team up with rebels from the fictional country of Urzikstan, combating together against Russian forces who have invaded the country and the terrorist group Al-Qatala. The game’s Special Ops mode features cooperative play missions that follow on from the campaign.
The multiplayer mode supports cross-platform multiplayer and cross-platform progression for the first time in the series. It has been reworked for gameplay to be more tactical and introduces new features, such as a Realism mode that removes the HUD as well as a form of the Ground War mode that now supports 64 players.
A post-launch update introduces a free-to-play battle royale mode, Warzone, which was also marketed as a standalone title.

Once again, top-notch realism but whether it is realistic depends on the player as a real special force like the Korean Navy Seal above. Some like pointing the gun at the fellow colleague during the raid is a big mistake and others include not checking all areas of the room including the back of the curtains.
This specific gameplay is all about tactics – with 3 main breaches into the house – one from the main door, upstairs window and the back. There are backups at the entrance and they keep the house in the dark so that it will be easier for the special force team to take to kill the terrorists.
Realistically the other terrorists would have been alerted with the sound of bullets and the ruckus downstairs so, in the name of computer games, some of these gaps may need to be overlooked.
