Childhood

(The old neighbourhood – today Institut Megatech stands on its ground and the ‘s barbershop used to be where Intec College now stands.  The only thing that has not changed in the last 40 years is the Shell Petrol Station. It has been there as far as I can remember.  It is a big surprise to see the houses that used to stand between the main road and the river is no longer there. Image source: Google Map)

Still, remember your very first neighbours or your old neighbourhood from your days?

Last week I attended my niece’s birthday party and as usual, once the cake has been cut and the dinner has started, my cousins and myself made our way to the outside of the house, set up a table on the porch, rounded several chairs and started to chit chat over a large bottle of liquor and wine. As usual, such chit chat continued until wee hours in the morning.

( was one the that I took on a daily basis when I was still very young. I was not that old to take this model – lane: Chan Sow Lin Road but the Toong Fong logo on the side of the bus remained until it was absorbed into Intrakota. Image source: here)

Remember those days when some of us “used” to take the BUS? Some of you who use the bus for daily commute to work may be wondering what the hell BJ is talking about but I have to admit – it has been quite a while since I last took a bus (these days the routes have gotten so confusing).

My grandmother – from my mother’s side is about 75 now (75 or 70, she can’t recall for she is not sure which year she was born).

She was born in Malaysia (Malaya back then), lived in where her father (my great grandfather) had a grocery shop (which meant they had rice for meals). She had a sister and 2 brothers and thanks to her father’s resourcefulness, the whole family survived through the Japanese occupation during the War World 2 (not making any trouble with the Japanese helped too).

Sundry shops those days, in the early 80s, were nothing like these days’ grand oversized hypermarkets. Small sundry shops were the lifeline to many small residential areas.
